Quamon Fowler, powerful gospel jazz

Talk about Quamon Fowler, is talk about a very creative musician. Originally from Forth Worh, Texas USA, he started his career as tenor saxophonist when he was only eleven years, and as composer at fifteen. He studied at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana with the world-renowned clarinetist Alvin Batiste.

In the spring of 2002, Quamon was selected to be a part of the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program, which also took place at the Kennedy Center. In the same year, his composition The Reinforcement was reviewed and selected as one of the top three compositions in the first annual ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer’s Awards competition. As a recipient of the ASCAP Award, he was able to perform at the ASCAP headquarters in New York as a part of the annual Jazz Wall of Fame induction ceremony. In 2003, was selected to participate in the Jazz and the New Generation program, hosted by Dr. Billy Taylor. Later in the year the saxophonist was able to perform at the Ravinia Jazz Festival directed by David Baker. In December of the same year, he had the honor of performing with Nathan Davis, Curtis Fuller, George Cables, and Jimmy Woody as a part of the Paris Reunion Band in Dubai, UAE.

Quamon have recorded four albums where it's possible to note different musical influences: straight-ahead, bebop, groove and soul using a christian perspective through elements of gospel. The result of this mix is very powerfull, creative and inspirational. His compositions on the one hand are very energic and virtuous, and the other are a real expression of his own spirituality and praise to God.

Quamon is a believer with a strong christian conviction. In fact, apart of his career as musician, he is an active member of church, participating in different religious ministries. He also is an active educator and the webmaster of Jazz WebShed, a website focused to teaching of jazz, where it's possible to find a lot of resources for musicians as online lessons, scores, videos, etc.
